C.R.A.P.
- Contrast
- foreground vs background colours
- font-size differences in the hierarchy
- size differences to group or set things apart
- One element with colour on a page that is largely black & white to draw attention
- Repetition
- reuse colours or small design elements throughout the page and site to create a sense of familiarity
- Use the same controls and widgets to achieve similar actions
- Put your navigation in the same order and in the same place
- Alignment
- Vertical and Horizontal alignment of all your elements
- create an invisible grid and align your elements to that grid
- Elements that are aligned will be mentally grouped
- Proximity (think Gestalt)
- Elements that are close together will be mentally grouped
- Things that look similar will be mentally grouped
- If spacing changes it will interfere with the grouping
- Creating large amounts of empty (negative) space around an element will help to highlight it
